Portraits by Darci is a newly established photography business which opened in August 2008 by Darci (Nelsen) Schields.

I, (Darci), grew up in Bird City, Kansas and graduated from Cheylin in 1992. In 2008, my husband, Kale, accepted the 6th grade teaching position at Cheylin Elementary, bringing my family back to my hometown. Bird City is such a great little community and a super place to raise kids!

Speaking of kids…Kale and I have 3 wonderful children who are 16 years, 8 years, and 2 years. As you can see, we have 3 completely different stages going on…keeping us very busy and on the go!

Photography has been a great window of opportunity for me and my family. When we made the decision to move back to Bird City, I didn’t know at the time what career path I would be taking…I have always been fortunate to be able to work around my job, and my kids’ schedules and their sporting events. With my oldest son in high school, I knew sports were only going to get busier! After much thought and research, I decided to pursue the option of opening my own business…’Portraits by Darci’. Since then, I have had some great opportunities to build my business portfolio by taking Cheylin sports photos, senior portraits, family pictures…and of course, hundreds of my own children’s photos, (which by the way, my 9 month old is more tolerant of my photo-taking than my other two)!

Photography is quite an adventure…each session is unique in its own way, and I am constantly learning new things. I truly enjoy what I do, plus it allows me the freedom to be the ‘on the go’ mom which is what’s most important to me!!!
